What is Cistanche(Herba Cistanche,Rou Cong Rong) ? What is it used for?: Cistanches (Herba Cistanche) Cistanches is a tonic herb which increases the blood circulation. It has a r eputation for increasing energy and maintaining youthfulness. It acts as a tonic for the kidneys, helps to improve bowel function and increases vitality. The Lati n name is Herba Cistanche and the Chinese name is Rou Cong Rong Cistanche is a hardy, shrub-like plant native to the desert regions of Mongo lia and northern China. It is shaped somewhat like a cross between a pine cone an d a pineapple, with thick, fleshy stems and large, yellow flowers that grow small er as the plant¡¯s apex. The stems are gathered in the spring, dried in the sun a nd cut into slices for medicinal use. In traditional Chinese medicine, cistanche is used to replenish blood and st rengthen kidney yang. It is most commonly used to treat impotence and premature e jaculation (as part of a formula containing rehmannia root, dadder seed and schis andra); pain in the lower back and knees (as part of a formula containing morinda root and eucommia bark); and constipation (as part of a formula containing hemp seed). Some studies suggest cistanche can treat some cases of infertility and low er blood pressure. Chemical Component and Phytochemistry of Cistanches (Herba Cistanche):Orobanc hin, alkaloids.: The Chinese drug "Rou Cong-rong" (Herba Cistanchis) is one of the commonly u sed drugs in Chinese traditional medicine. It is used to reinforce the vital func tion of kidney, especially that of the sexual organs and induce laxation, for the treatment of impotence, premature ejaculation in men, infertility, morbid leukor rhea, profuse metrorrhagia in women, and chronic constipation in the aged. This p aper deals with the qualitative and quantitative analysis of phenylethanoid glyco sides of four species and one variety of Genus Cistanche and 23 lots of commercia l crude drugs of Herba Cistanchis by RP-HPLC. The results were as follows: the chemical constituents of Cistanche desertic ola Ma, C. salsa (C. A. Mey) G. Beck, C. salsa var. albiflora P. F. Tu et Z. C. L ou and C. tubulosa were similar while those of C. sinensis were different from th e others; the contents of echinacoside and acteoside of C. salsa, which were 2.13 % and 1.51%, were the highest of the genus Cistanche. An ODS column (Alltima C18, 5 microns, 250 x 4.6 mm) was employed. Linear gradient elution of acetonitrile-- 1.5% acetic acid was used as mobile phase, and concentration of acetontrile was f rom 8% to 20% (0-60 min) in the qualitative analysis, and from 11.5 to 20% (0-35 min) in the quantitative analysis. The flow rate was 1.2 ml.min-1. The detection wavelength was set at 335 nm. br> --------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------

Effects There are reports to show Cistanche has effects of increasing saliva secretion, lowering blood pressure and increasing of body weight.The effect of C istanche is rather mild, and many times have to use a larger amount to gain the e ffects. Contraindications: Because it is a warm tonifying herb, it is not advice to use for subjects wh o have dryness of mouth, diarrhea and hot sensation in palms. How much cistanche should I take? The standard dose of cistanche is 10-20 grams daily, boiled in water for ora l use. What can happen if I take too much cistanche? Are there any interactions I s hould be aware of? What precautions should I take? Cistanche is extremely safe. The American Herbal Products Association has gi ven it a class one rating, meaning that it can be consumed safely when used appro priately. However, because it is a warm, tonifying herb, it should not be used by patients with dry mouth or diarrhea, or patients diagnosed with yin deficiency. As of this writing, there are no known drug interactions with cistanche.
