Gotu Kola Facts Gotu Kola is known as a longevity herb and is used widely in India as part of their traditional medicine Ayurveda. This red flowered plant grows naturally in swampy areas of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, South Africa, Australia, China and the southern United States. Its roots and leaves are used for medicinal purposes and provide important health benefits related to healthy veins and bloo d vessels, to treat skin disorders, help with better memory and improve brain fun ction. Gotu kola is a slender, creeping plant that grows commonly in swampy areas of India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, South Africa and the tropics. Its fan shaped leave s are about the size of an old British penny - hence its common names Indian penn ywort, marsh penny and water pennywort. It is regarded as one of the most spiritual and rejuvenating herbs in Ayurved a and is used to improve meditation. It is said to develop the crown chakra, the energy center at the top of the head, and to balance the right and left hemispher es of the brain, which the leaf is said to resemble. Gotu kola has been widely used for a number of conditions, particularly in tr aditional Eastern health care. In Ayurveda Gotu kola is one of the chief herbs fo r revitalizing the nerves and brain cells. It is said to fortify the immune syste m, both cleansing and feeding it, and to strengthen the adrenals. It has been used as a tonic for purification of blood and for promoting healt hy skin. It has also been used to aid in restful sleep, treat skin inflammations, as a treatment for high blood pressure and as a mild diuretic. Recent studies (1 995) demonstrated that Gotu kola destroyed cultured tumor cells in the laboratory setting (in vitro). The leaves of this swamp plant have been used around the world for centuries to treat leprosy, cancer, skin disorders, arthritis, hemorrhoids, and tuberculosi s. In recent years, Gotu kola has become popular in the West as a nerve tonic to promote relaxation and to enhance memory. The herbs calming properties make it well suited for overcoming insomnia and making one calm for yoga and meditative practices. It is commonly used to rebuild energy reserves improve memory and treat fatigue, both mental and physical.

How it Works Gotu Kola contains chemicals called triterpines (saponins) like asiaticoside, madecassoside and madasiatic acid which enhance the formulation of collagen in b ones, cartilage and connective tissue. These substances work to promote healthy b lood vessels by strengthening their walls and improving blood flow. Gotu Kola enc ourages production of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters to help with b rain function.

Possible Benefits Increases mental acuity and boosts memory. Builds connective tissue. Promotes healthy blood vessels by strengthening veins and capillaries to impr ove circulation. Helpful for varicose veins. Reduces pain and swelling due to phlebitis. Works as nerve tonic to promote relaxation. Promotes healing after childbirth. Relieves congestion due to colds and upper respiratory infections. Helps reduce fevers. Acts as a mild diuretic.

Gotu Kola is the main Ayurvedic brain-mind tonic for children and adults: Gotu kola has been referred to as "food for the brain". This oriental herb ha s demonstrated mild tranquilizing, anti-anxiety and anti-stress effects, as well as improving mental functions such as concentration and memory. It has a calming effect on the body and is chiefly used to support the central nervous system. The se beneficial qualities make Gotu kola an excellent herb for children with A.D.D. because it has a stimulating effect on the brain that increases one's ability to focus while having a soothing and relaxing effect on an overactive nervous syste m. Gotu kola is often used to increase mental function and performance. Many stu dies have confirmed the usefulness of gotu kola in improving brain function. It i s commonly prescribed in Europe and India to improve mental function. Research do ne in India found the water extract of fresh leaves to help improve memory and le arning. It was also found to help improve and overcome the negative effects assoc iated with stress and fatigue. 247 Promote longevity Improve your memory Stimulate brain cell vitality Build neural and mental stamina Increase your mental abilities Avoid senility and dullness Reduce stress and anxiety Nurture tranquility Claims Helps prevent Varicose Veins/Hemorrhoids Helps heal Scars/Burns/Wounds Reduces Skin Inflammation and Skin Wrinkles (smoother skin) Cellulite reduction Increases Energy levels Improves Memory and Circulation Promotes restful Sleep

Other clinical trials in India have found that gotu kola can help increase t he I.Q. and mental ability of mentally retarded children. The children involved i n the study showed improved mental capacity as well as improved behavior. It was given to the children in combination with capsicum and ginseng. 248 This improved behavior and mental capacity can help individuals with mental and learning disab ilities to achieve a higher quality of life. Another study found improvement in the memory of rats when given the gotu kol a extract. The learned behavior retention improved dramatically in the rats. The conclusion of the study was that gotu kola improves learning and memory Gotu kola is often confused with kola nut. Due to this confusion, some people assume the rejuvenating properties of Gotu kola are due to the stimulating effec ts of caffeine contained in kola nut. In fact, Gotu kola is not related to kola n ut and contains no caffeine. There are three main chemical constituents in Gotu k ola. The first is asiaticoside, which is a triterpene glycoside and classified as an antibiotic. It aids in wound healing and has been used in the treatment of le prosy and tuberculosis in the Far East. The second constituent is a pair of chemi cals, brahmoside and brahminoside, which are saponin glycosides. These are diuret ic in nature and have a slightly sedative action in large doses. Finally, there i s madecassoside, a glycoside that is a strong anti-inflammatory agent. The plant is also a source of Vitamin K, magnesium, calcium and sodium. Gotu Kola has been found to have significant results in healing of skin, othe r connective tissues, lymph tissue, blood vessels, and mucous membranes. Research ers have found that Gotu kola contains several glycosides that exhibit wound heal ing and anti-inflammatory activities and that asiaticosides stimulate the formati on of lipids and proteins necessary for healthy skin. Gotu kola affects various stages of tissue development, including keratinizat ion (the process of replacing skin after sores or ulcers), the synthesis of colla gen (the first step in tissue repair), the stimulation of hair and nail growth, a nd support for the repair of cartilage. Gotu kola has been effectively used in th e treatment of second and third degree burns. It has been shown to decrease heali ng time and reduce scar tissue formation. Recent studies show that Gotu kola also has a positive effect on the circulat ory system. It seems to improve the flow of blood throughout the body by strength ening the veins and capillaries. Gotu kola has been shown to be particularly usef ul for people who are inactive or confined to bed due to illness. The herb has been used successfully to treat phlebitis (inflammation of the v eins), varicose veins, as well as leg cramps, swelling of the legs, and "heavines s" or tingling in the legs. In modern health care it has been used for venous ins ufficiency, localized inflammation and infection, and post-surgery recovery.

Detox: Gotu Kola destroys toxic accumulations in the brain and nerves including resi dues of heavy metals and pharmaceutical and recreational drugs. It also one of the main herbs in Ayurveda to detox the Liver and Blood.

Coffee Substitute: Gotu Kola is an energy tonic that removes fatigue and counteracts some of the negative effects of coffee.

Cancer: Gotu Kola is used to treat cancer and tumors. Studies indicate it decreases t umors and increases the life span of those with advanced conditions, without syst emic toxicity or immune system suppression.

Kidney/Liver: Gotu Kola builds adrenal and kidney strength and calms negative liver emotion s.

Yoga: Gotu Kola, called Brahmi in Ayurveda, meaning "the Goddess of Supreme Wisdom" ,has helped spiritual seekers find wisdom for millennia. Purifying and deeply bal ancing to Prana, the mind and to awareness, Gotu Kola is excellent food for yogis and meditators.

Theory Gotu kola contains a blend of compounds including at least 3 triterpen es (asiatic acid, madecassic acid and asiaticoside) that appear to have antioxida nt benefits and an ability to stimulate collagen synthesis for tissue regeneratio n.

Scientific Support Perhaps the best data for Gotu kola is shown by its abilit y to improve symptoms of varicose veins, particularly overall discomfort, tiredne ss, and swelling. In human studies, Gotu kola extract (30-180mg/day/4 weeks) lead s to improvements in various measurements of vein function (foot swelling, ankle edema, and fluid leakage from the veins) compared to placebo. Gotu kola appears t o have a generally beneficial effect on connective tissues, where it may improve the structure and function of the connective tissue in the body, keeping veins st ronger and also possibly reducing the symptoms of other connective-tissue disease s. In one animal study, asiatic acid and asiaticoside were the most active of the 3 triterpenes 每 but all 3 were effective in stimulating collagen synthesis and glycosaminoglycan synthesis. Radiation injury to the skin of Sprague-Dawley rats can be reduced by treatment with madecassol (one of the triterpene compounds in G otu kola) 每 suggesting a skin regeneration and anti-inflammatory activity.

The activity of asiaticoside has been studied in normal as well as delayed-ty pe wound healing. In one animal study (guinea pig punch wounds) topical applicati ons of asiaticoside (0.2% solution) produced a 56% increase in hydroxyproline, 57 % increase in tensile strength, increased collagen content and better epithelisat ion. In streptozotocin diabetic rats, where healing is delayed, topical applicati on of 0.4% solution of asiaticoside over punch wounds increased hydroxyproline co ntent, tensile strength, collagen content and epithelisation thereby facilitating the healing. In each of these studies, asiaticoside was shown also to be active by the oral route (at 1 mg/kg dose) 每 suggesting that Gotu kola may work by stim ulating synthesis of collagen and increasing connective tissue strength. Other studies have indicated an antioxidant effect of asiaticoside. When appl ied topically (0.2% solution) twice daily for 7 days to skin wounds in rats, resu lts show an increase in both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, namely sup eroxide dismutase (35%), catalase (67%), glutathione peroxidase (49%), vitamin E (77%) and ascorbic acid (36%) in newly formed tissues. It also results in a sever al fold decrease in lipid peroxide levels (69%) as measured in terms of thiobarbi turic acid reactive substance (TBARS). This enhancement of antioxidant levels at an initial stage of healing may be an important contributory factor in the healin g properties of Gotu kola.

There is no credible evidence supporting the claims of Gotu Kola to benefit e nergy levels, memory enhancement, cellulite reduction, or restful sleep.

Safety Orally, gotu kola appears to be nontoxic and it seldom causes any sid e effects other than the occasional allergic skin rash. There are some concerns t hat gotu kola may be carcinogenic if applied topically to the skin 每 though this has not appeared as a major concern in animal models of wound healing. There is some anecdotal evidence that gotu kola may result in elevated blood sugar levels 每 and effect that could be of concern to individuals with diabetes.

Value The primary benefits of Gotu kola appear to be an enhancement of wound healing and an improvement in overall vein function (especially for varicose vein s and hemorrhoids). Selling for anywhere between $15 and $30 for a 1-month supply , Gotu kola represents a good value for people who suffer from varicose veins or swollen ankles as well as for anybody recovering from a connective tissue injury (muscle/tendon strain, ligament sprain, skin abrasion, etc#).

Dosage Typical dosage recommendations are in the range of 60-180 mg/day, usua lly consumed in divided doses (20-60mg) 3 times daily for at least 4 weeks. It is important to look for an extract standardized to contain triterpene compounds 每 typically 30-40% and including asiaticoside, asiatic acid, madecassic acid, and madecassoside (these compounds typically occur at only 1-4% in the whole herb).
