Introduction of Plant Origin: Rheum Palmatum Root (Synoms:Horse Palm Rheum 、General、etc.) Emodin is a naturally occurring anthraquinone present in the roots and bark o f numerous plants of the genus Rhamnus. Extracts from the roots, bark, and/or dr i ed leaves of buckthorn, senna, cascara, aloe, frangula, and rhubarb have been us e d as laxatives since ancient times and currently are widely used in the preparat i on of herbal laxative preparations. Anthraquinone glycosides are poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract butare cleaved by gut bacteria to produce aglycones (such as emodin) that are mo r e readily absorbed and are responsible for the purgative properties of these pre p arations.

Note:about material: Rheum Palmatum Root in china normally 2 sources, one is planted in man-made e nvironment and greenhouse, and another is wild plant origin. MDidea material roo t used for processing all from wild enviroment and Qilian Mountains of West China .

MDidea Natural Emodin extracted mainly from wild root of Rheum Palmatum L.(R. potaninii A.Los.), this plant could be high as 2 meters, and with large root sho w ed picturtes mentioned above, root color is deep brown, stem erection and careless , hollow inside, base leaves with thick long plant handle with it's length as the

leaves, shape of vane similar egg or roundness, with diameter 40cm less or more,pa l m shape and half split.leaves totally 5~7. MDidea Natural Rhein extracted mainly from wild root of Rheum palmatum L.var. tanguticum Maxim.ex Rgl.(R.tanguticum Maxim.ex Balf.;R.palmatum L. var. dissectu m Stapf f. rubiflora Stapf) and quality the best.

Content and Chemicals of Rheum Palmatum Root: Natural Rheum Palmatum Root contains many kind of effective content and as fo llowing: Rhein,emodin,aloe-emodin,chrysophanol,physcion and other content of anthraqui nones totally about 30%,Rheumtannicacids about 5%。 Anthraquinones and related content from Natural Rheum Palmatum Root act an ha ve functions of causing diarrhoea: and Anthraquinone and rlated content mainly include content as following: (1):Chrysophanol(Synoms:Chrysophanicacid,C15H10O4), (2):Emodin(Synoms:Rhe-umemodin,C15H10O5)、 (3):Aloe一emodin(C15H10O5), (4):(Rhein,C15H8O6), (5):Physcion(Synoms:Parietin、Rheochrysidin,C16H12O5)

and five content of Anthraquinone mentioned above normally found near the cam bium of Natural Rheum Palmatum root, some of them is in free state and mainly li e s in xylemof root, but they mainly lies in the older part of root and exist in th e form of monoglucoside. and the functions of causing diarrhoea mainly corelated with the content in t he form of monoglucoside, and has nearly no relation with free form. and the Anthraquinone with strong functions of causing diarrhoea mainly as fo llowing: (1):Chrysophanol-1-monoglucoside,or Chrysophaein(C20O9.H2O); (2):Emodin-6-monoglucoside,C21O10.H2O); (3):Aloe-emodin-8-monoglucoside(C21H20O10·H2O); (4):Rhein-8-mono-glucoside(C21Hl8O11); (5):Physcionmonoglucoside(C22H22O10).

Natural Rheum Palmatum Root also contains Rheumtannicacids and related conte nt,as Gallicacid ,also named C6H2(OH)3COOH),Catechin(C15H14O6.4H2O); and Tetr a rin(C32H32O12) Gallicacid existed in 2forms, some of Gallicacid in free state and some of Ga llicacid integrate with monoglucoside and form Glucogallin(Galloylglucose,C13H1 6 O10). Tetrarin(C32H32O12) hydrolyzed and and become Gallicacid,Cinna-micacid(C6H5.C H:CH,COOH)and Rheosmin(C10H12O2). Rheumtannicacids and related content mentioned above have functions of anti-d iarrhoea n just opposite with the functions of content of Anthraquinone.

other content from the Natural Rheum Palmatum Root: natural fatty acid, such as palmitic acid、stearic acid、oleic acid、Linoleic Acid and linolenic acid in f ree form or integrate-form. [Biologicals and Aplication]:(main effective content:Emodin,Rhein, etc.) Anti-aggregant*Anti-cancer*Anti-feedant*Anti-inflammatory*Antiseptic*Antiulc er*Myorelaxant Effect on the Growth Inhibition and the Mechanism of the Helicobacter pylori Effetive nd function for cure:ARDS,MODS,MOF and other disease. Emodin is a naturally occurring anthraquinone present in the roots and bark of numerous plants of the genus Rhamnus. Extracts from the roots, bark, and/or d r ied leaves of buckthorn, senna, cascara, aloe, frangula, and rhubarb have been us e d as laxatives since ancient times and currently are widely used in the preparat i on of herbal laxative preparations. Anthraquinone glycosides are poorly absorbed

from the gastrointestinal tract but are cleaved by gut bacteria to produce aglyc o nes (such as emodin) that are more readily absorbed and are responsible for the p urgative properties of these preparations. There is extensive exposure to emodin

and other anthraquinones resulting from the use of herb-based stimulant laxative s . Reports that 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone, a commonly used laxative ingredient, c aused tumors in the gastrointestinal tract of rats raised the possibility of an a ssociation between colorectal cancer and the use of laxatives containing anthraq u inones. Because emodin is a hydroxyanthraquinone structurally similar to 1,8-dihydro xyanthraquinone,is present in herbal laxatives, and was reported to be mutagenic i n bacteria, it was considered a potential carcinogen and was selected for in-dep t h evaluation. Male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice were exposed to emodin

(at least94% pure) in feed for 16 days, 14 weeks, or 2 years. Genetic toxicology studies were conducted in Salmonella typhimurium, culture d Chinese hamsterovary cells, rat and mouse bone marrow cells, and mouse periphe r al blood erythrocytes. Emodin (3-methyl-1,6,8-trihydroxyanthraquinone) inhibits TNF-induced NF-B ac tivation, IB degradation, and expression of cell surface adhesion proteins in hu m an vascular endothelial cells Most inflammatory agents activate nuclear transcription factor-B (NF-B) whic h results in expression of genes for cytokines, adhesion molecules, and enzymes i nvolved in amplification and perpetuation of inflammation. Emodin (3-methyl-1,6, 8 -trihydroxyanthraquinone) is an active component from the roots of Polygonum cus p idatum that has been reported to exhibit antiinflammatory properties but the mec h anism is not known. In the present study we investigated the effects of emodin o n the activation of NF-B in human umbelical vein endothelial cells (EC). Treatmen t of EC with TNF activated NF-B; preincubation with emodin inhibited this activat i on in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Emodin did not chemically modify NF-B s u bunits but rather inhibited degradation of IB, an inhibitory subunit of NF-B. Si n ce the promoter regions of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and ELAM-1 contain NF-B binding sites

and these adhesion molecules are involved in the attachment of leukocytes to EC,

the effect of emodin on the adhesion of monocytes to EC and the expression of th e se adhesion molecules was also studied. Treatment of EC with TNF for 6 h increas e d the adhesion of monocytes to EC, which correlated with increases in cell surfa c e expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and ELAM-1. Pretreatment of EC for 1 h with emodi n inhibited both monocyte-EC attachment and expression of ICAM-1, ELAM-1 and VCAM - 1. These results indicate that emodin is a potent inhibitor of NF-B activation and expression of adhesion molecules and thus could be useful in treating variou s inflammatory diseases.
